Recovery from Bone Spur Injury

Recovery from Bone Spur Injury

Tracy Wartman has had her share of running-related injuries over the last 30 years. However, it wasn’t until the last year that she had an injury that required more extensive care. Fortunately, she knew she could turn to her long-time physician, Coordinated Health Podiatric Surgeon Edward Schwartz to get her back on track. Tracy’s had her share of running-related injuries over the years. In fact, she got to know Coordinated Health Podiatric Surgeon Dr. Schwartz so well that she babysat his kids when she was younger. She says her injuries were normal for runners and ranged from small stress fractures to ankle sprains that generally went away with minimal issues. However, last year she began to experience prolonged foot pain that wouldn’t go away. “I knew it was time to go see Dr. Schwartz when it literally hurt to wear shoes,” said Tracy. Dr. Schwartz told Tracy that she had a development of bone spurs on the back of her heel, right where the achilles tendon attaches. “When there are bone spurs in that area it tends to get very sore when it rubs against shoes and she was putting in quite a bit of mileage at this point so it wasn’t surprising that she was having quite a bit of pain,” says Dr. Schwartz. Initially Dr. Schwartz tried conservative treatment methods like physical therapy, over-the-counter medication and ultrasound treatments, but, the pain persisted and she was unable to run. Finally, Dr. Schwartz told her that her best chance of being able to run pain free again was through surgery. While nervous about having surgery, Tracy says she completely trusted Dr. Schwartz. “He knows how I am with running and wanting to be active so when he said that surgery was an option, I said, let’s just do it,” says Tracy. Tracy admits that getting back into running was a slow process. “It was a frustrating and liberating process. After months in the boot I was happy to be outside and running again, but I didn’t want to rush because I really wanted to make sure that everything healed correctly,” she says. Now Tracy is back to her running routine and says she is grateful to Dr. Schwartz and would absolutely recommend him. “I would absolutely recommend Dr. Schwartz. I’ve been seeing him for over 30 years, my family all goes to him as well and we trust him 110 percent,” she says. Stronger after Double HIP Replacement- MMA Instructor

My name is James Simpson and I’ve been doing mixed martial arts for over 35 years. Over the last couple of years I just started noticing, wow… something isn’t right. My kicks were getting softer, I was starting to hurt a little more, I’m feeling a lot of pain and this just isn’t good. I finally went to Dr. Carl Weiss from Coordinated Health, and he confirmed what I didn’t want to know and didn’t want to hear. I needed both hips replaced. My hips were pretty much worn down to nothing, from all the years of stretching and kicking, and rolling around, and he told me it’s a common thing now in martial artists. I had two hips done, the first one I did at the beginning of this year in January and after that I was like wow this no pain is incredible. I went right back after my visit and asked when can we do the next one. Two months later, I did the second one and the relief is just incredible. I was up and walking around that day of surgery, which blew my mind and it took a little bit of time but within a week or two I was back on the mat walking around getting more and more flexible. I was so amazed, after I got them done my life came back, I got the joy of teaching again, I could move again, there was no pain, it was like it just rejuvenated me. I was so happy with my outcome, I knew somebody else who had the trouble, I recommended Dr Weiss to her, and she’s recovered and amazed and back on the mat training as well. Anterior Hip Replacement Option for Larry Danko

Anterior Hip Replacement Option for Larry Danko

Fitness enthusiast and owner of Danko Gym, Larry Danko, is no stranger to aches and pains. As a lifelong athlete, he’s had his share of sports related injuries. However, when his hip pain began to interfere with his everyday activities, he knew he needed to seek help. “I was a football player, a power lifter, wrestler, golfer through my whole life and they all kind of transformed one after another so I never really gave my body the necessary break that it needed,” he says. Danko initially believed he just had a groin pull, but imaging studies revealed that he actually had advanced osteoarthritis and his joints were bone-on-bone. “A joint is made up of bone and cartilage and when we say someone is bone-on-bone, that means they don’t have any cartilage left,” says Coordinated Health Orthopedic Physician Christopher Samujh, M.D. Anterior Hip Replacement Danko began to research his options when it came to hip replacements and was pleasantly surprised to find that he had several options. The one he was most excited about was the anterior approach, which is recommended for patients with an active lifestyle. As he searched for an orthopedic surgeon who performed the procedure locally, he came across one of his own gym member Dr. Samujh. “The anterior approach is a good fit for someone like Larry. One of the benefits is that after the surgery there are no restrictions and the recovery is faster for at least the first few weeks,” says Dr. Samujh. Dr. Samujh explains that during an anterior hip, he goes through the front of the hip to replace the hip joint. He refers to the surgery as a muscle sparing procedure, which means that no muscles are cut; they are simply moved to the side. The Road to Recovery- Dr. Samujh was impressed with Danko’s speedy recovery. “I called his cell phone to check on him at 10 a.m. the morning after surgery and he was already halfway home,” laughed Dr. Samujh. Danko admits that his recovery was ‘comical’ because it was so fast. “I’d be walking around the gym and people would say, ‘didn’t you just have a hip replacement?’ They couldn’t believe it,” he says. Now, just six months after his surgery, Danko says he is back to his golf game and feeling better than ever. He credits Dr. Samujh for his success. “If I see anyone having hip issues, I immediately recommend him. He never said he thought he’d be able to get me back to golfing, he said he would be able to get me back. His confidence was reassuring,” says Danko.

MMA fighter Mike Liberto unstoppable after ACL Reconstruction

Mike “The Bethlehem Brawler” Liberto is well known on the Mixed Martial Arts circuit. The 31-year-old was an elite high school wrestler and football player prior to moving on to the MMA, where he is an undefeated middleweight fighter. When he tore his ACL during a practice he thought he was finished. Then he went to Coordinated Health and Dr Wayne Luchetti. When Dr. Luchetti examined Mike, he found not one but two tears. In addition to the ACL, the MCL was also injured. He outlined a treatment plan for Mike. First they would address the MCL allowing it to heal on its own with the help of rehab. Once his MCL was intact, the doctor would surgically reconstruct Mike’s ACL using a cadaver graft. Just seven months after the surgery, Mike is back in training, preparing for his next boxing match Dr. Luchetti holds the distinction of being one of the few orthopedic surgeons in the Lehigh Valley to have a Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopedic Sports Medicine from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He has extensive experience treating athletes at the high school and college level. Dr. Luchetti has been the team physician at Lehigh University since 2002 and also serves as the team physician at Nazareth High School For more information about Coordinated Health contact ►https://coordinatedhealth.com/team/wayne-luchetti-md/ For more information about Coordinated Health contact ► https://coordinatedhealth.com/ For more information about Studio1300 Productions contact ► http://studio1300video.com Martin Wambold - Videographer, Editor, and Graphics Hannah Bean Ropp - Writer/Video Producer FinalCut X / Canon C100 [DISCLAIMER!] ALL images are copyrighted to it's rightful owner.
